Fish Welfare Initiative is seeking an aquaculture expert with in-depth technical expertise in fish and aquaculture systems in India.

About FWI
Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) works to improve the welfare of farmed fishes as much as possible. We research and implement effective fish welfare interventions in partnership with farmers, governments, and other organizations. Learn more about our programs here.

Our Programs Department runs our core program, the Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture (ARA). This program centers on our ground teams collecting water quality data from fish farms (currently, over 100 farms are supported through the program) and providing the farmers with corrective actions in the event of key water quality parameters indicating that fishes may be exposed to poor conditions.

Our Research and Development (R&D) Department focuses on developing new theories of change and conducting studies to inform and improve our programs. The department’s work helps to both (1) shape new initiatives and (2) refine strategies for scaling our existing program, the Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture (ARA).

About The Role
As an Aquaculture Expert, you will provide technical expertise and support to guide FWI’s programs and research initiatives, ensuring they are aligned with the specific conditions of Indian aquaculture. You will also represent FWI as the technical expert for engaging key stakeholders including governments (state and national levels), farmers, and other institutions.
Location: In reasonable proximity to one of our offices in Eluru and Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh (project location determined by organization); Some travel (up to 25%) will be required
Position Type: Full-time
Compensation: INR 1-1.5 lakhs per month, with some flexibility for candidates with greater experience

How You Will Make a Difference
The following are the primary responsibilities of this role:
1. Guiding the Programs Department (40%):

Provide insight and technical support for all aspects of FWI’s current core program, the ARA, including advising on corrective actions for water quality.

Provide guidance on effective farmer engagement strategies, ensuring clear communication and successful implementation of welfare interventions at the farm level.

Enhance program operations through training and support for on-ground teams.

Oversee fish health management, including recommending treatments for disease and lice outbreaks, and providing feedback on overall fish health and strategies for improving welfare in ARA ponds.

Offer insights and technical guidance for new programs, ensuring they are tailored to the realities of Indian aquaculture.

Serve as the technical expert in India for engaging farmers as part of the ARA, or any future program that is built around engaging farmers.
2. Supporting R&D Department activities (40%):

Provide insight and technical support for the selection of new interventions to be tested, and/or studies designed to increase knowledge around fish welfare

Provide insight and technical support for the design of studies, helping to contextualize study designs to specific conditions of Indian aquaculture

Provide technical support during the implementation of studies, ensuring that research is aligned with the specific conditions of Indian aquaculture, and assisting with responses to emergencies like disease outbreaks or water quality issues.
3. Supporting our Policy Department which involves (20%):

Leveraging their network to engage suitable experts from government or academic institutions whenever additional technical expertise is required.
Qualifications
Required Criteria

Nationality: Only open to those with the right to work in India

Education: Masters or PhD in aquaculture

Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in the Indian aquaculture sector

Language Skills: Fluent in English & Telugu
We prefer candidates who have the following experience/skills:

Aquaculture research expertise

Has experience building relationships with farmers

Has worked in aquaculture organisations or agencies

Has the credibility to be recognized as an expert by farmers and other key stakeholders (e.g., government agencies)
